Whey, work has bought me one of these! Good times
However, I do have the task of setting up a LAMP environment on it whilst also continuing to do the days work which is more than plenty already, meaning I’m probably waking up at about 4.30am…
So, the question is – MAMP or XAMPP? Both are pre-built apps that should work-out-of-the-box in order to get an Apache, PHP, MySQL environment in place, but which is best? I’ve got a very much-so modified MAMP installed on my Macbook which works fine, but it has been hacked about a lot and I do remember staying up late a few nights trying to get the damn thing to work correctly!
From the install, I’m going to need PhpMyAdmin, .htaccess support, GD Image Library, Image Magik at the very least, to name a few.
Looking at the features, MAMP offers everything I need, so that’s my first choice, but then again XAMPP offers a similar section… We’ll see how it goes with MAMP first. Keep an eye on my Twitter updates throughout the day too!

Well, I have always used XAMPP when I’ve needed a local install and never had any touble with it.
BTW – you need to look at how the comments box renders in FF2!

awesome!
I personally prefer the difficult approach – installing everything from source, because you just know where you are. Not tried to install Image Magick from source, but I’ve got gd2 and all the other stuff I use so it’s the best for me.

Thanks for the comments guys…
It worked out best using MAMP – had it installed & working within 20 mins, set up my vhosts file with all the sites I work on at work within another 10 mins or so and it was away – no real problems at all.
The default root user/pass for accessing MySQL is displayed to you quite clearly, so no worries there either.
For a simple out-of-the box method, I would highly recommend MAMP to anyone running on a Mac

Hi,
I hear alot of bad reviews with regards to MAMP and especially MAMP Pro as the german company behind it are not releasing future versions. Their support do not reply to forum/support questions. I think the view of MAMP is somewhat different from back in 2008! Anyone reading this considering MAMP should seriously consider using MAMP Basic or XAMPP.
