Yesterday I headed over to Chichester randomly for bit of night photography. I don’t know Chichester all that well, so the only thing that came to mind to photograph was of course Chichester’s famous Cathedral. It really does look spectacular at night, so I set the camera up, set the White Balance to my own custom one and shot a few…

Chichester Cathedral at night

To the stars

I think they came out pretty damn good to be honest. It looks surreal, computer-game-like even. Very weird. I haven’t done hardly any post-processing either.

Another note to take on board when shooting at night is to use a medium aperture, rather than a large one. For a while now I’ve been using the largest aperture I can get on my lens so that it doesn’t take as long to expose, and so I don’t have to wait around for ages (when shooting non-moving objects of course)

Using a large aperture does mean that you don’t have to expose the photo as long to get about the same effect, but using a medium aperture (f6 to f11 – give or take) usually means that photos will come out a lot sharper and crisper. Medium aperture’s also produce nicer looking street lamp flares and bright light flares on long exposures in my opinion.

I may have to do a comparison of different aperture’s at night soon…

Yes it is. How longs it been there for? I haven’t been to Chichester in a good year, at least!

Well the end you photographed was under it in 2002ish, and where it is now has been there at least 2 maybe 3 years…

Blimey, thats quite a while. I can’t really remember seeing it when I was last there, but then again I don’t have the greatest memory!

What do you think?
